Do more walking if you rarely exercise your body. Walking around may be the only thing that helps.
Think about your caffeine consumption. Coffee, sodas, tea, and over-the-counter medications may contain caffeine.
Try cutting your consumption of caffeine and see if your condition improves. Avoid tobacco and alcohol, which can have its own negative effects on sleep as well.
Modify your medication usage. Some over the counter drugs, like cold medications and allergy pills, contain mild stimulants that can result in nervousness. Ask your pharmacist if any medications you’re taking contain stimulants. Ask him if there are any “non stimulating” alternatives.
Take a warm bath or massage before bed. This relaxes muscles and may be helpful.
Some experts believe that a deficiency in iron, folate (folic acid), or magnesium may contribute to restless legs syndrome.
Make sure to include nutrient-rich foods in your diet. You’ll get the vitamins and minerals you need with raw fruits and vegetables.
Have a bedtime routine. Get into a regular time that will help your mind and body settle down and prepare for bed.
Going to bed at about the same time each night and getting a full night’s sleep may help avoid the fatigue that could be contributing to restless leg syndrome.
Stress may also cause restless legs syndrome. Try to eliminate stress in your life. Regular exercise will help you “De-stress.”
Even moderate exercise helps. A daily walk at a moderate pace is a good exercise, especially for people who haven’t been very active in a while.
Try stretching your muscles in your legs, like your calves, hamstrings, and gluteal muscles before bed. Avoid processed foods that may contain MSG.
Some experts have found that many people who suffer from restless leg syndrome also seem to have cold feet. This leads to speculation that it may be related to a circulatory problem.
People that have never suffered from this problem can’t possibly understand how awful it is to go through sleepless nights of walking and trying to shake this feeling.
One home remedy that seems to work for people that suffer from nightly leg cramps, is sleeping with a bar of homemade soap. This is the most bizarre thing I’ve ever heard of, but there are testimonies from people that have tried this restless leg syndrome home remedies treatment and swear it works.
And there are others that have tried it and say they got no relief at all. What can it hurt to try it for yourself? No one has to know.
Take a bar of plain soap, no deodorant or antibacterial soap. Put the bar of soap between your mattress pad and bottom sheet. Then sleep with the soap there for a couple of nights.
Nobody can explain why this works. It’s a strange treatment and it sounds like nonsense. Some people won’t even try it thinking that they are being made a fool out of, but those that have tried this and it worked are amazed at how simple it was to get a good nights sleep while being free of symptoms.
Better yet, try spraying lavender, cinnamon, essential oil of orange combination.
Try B3, B6, B9, B12 Vitamins. (Don’t take B12 in the later afternoon or at bedtime.) Valerian is also good for calming before bedtime.
