Usually, it’s either something in the environment or something you’re doing to your skin, causing the “stripping away” these fatty oils, leaving your skin unprotected. Less often, it’s a health condition or possibly a genetic predisposition.

Dry, itchy skin can appear anywhere, but it’s most common on the arms, hands, lower legs, and abdomen.

If untreated, dry skin can sometimes lead to dermatitis, or inflammation of the skin.

If you’ve had dry skin, you’ve probably already tried a moisturizer. Most people have never tried home remedies for dry skin though. Moisturizers are a crucial part of dry skin care, but experts say that we don’t always use them very well.

The biggest mistake we make is applying moisturizer on dry skin, when it’s least likely to help. “You have to put on moisturizer when your skin is still damp.” That way, the moisturizer traps the moisture still on your skin.

Just pat yourself dry with a towel and put moisturizer on. Let it soak in for a few minutes, and then towel off the excess.

Do you have the right type of moisturizer? Get mild moisturizers that have no perfumes or alcohols. Home remedies for dry skin won’t use perfumes or alcohol.

How do I know if it will work? Put some of your lotion in the palm of your hand and flip your hand over, if it runs or drips, it’s not thick enough for dry skin.

Dry air is probably the most common cause of dry skin, especially during the winter. It draws moisture right out of the skin. Winter is the most common time of year we experience the need for a home remedy.

The need for treatment is created when the dry heat churned out by your furnace every winter, dries your skin further.

During the summer, air conditioning can have a similar effect. Air conditioning is running constantly in the summer and is also removing valuable moisture for your skin.

To counteract the dry heat, start with a moisturizer. Turning down the thermostat a bit in the winter can also help, if you don’t freeze.

In the winter, use a humidifier in your bedroom, and bundle up, with hats, scarves and gloves, when you’re outside.

Wear socks that go high up on your shins during the winter. Cold air can actually get under the pant leg and dry out your skin on the legs. People don’t even think about.

Prolonged exposure to water, (shower) especially hot water, can wash away the natural oils that protect your skin. (If you get out of the bath or shower and skin feels tight, it’s dried out.)

Choose showers over baths. If you’re used to waking up in the morning with a long, hot shower, dermatologists have some brutal advice for you… “limit showers to a few minutes and skip the hot water.”

It should be lukewarm rather than hot. Angle the shower head away from you while you shave or soap up. It’s another way of reducing the time your skin is being hit by the water.

Afterward, pat your body dry with a towel, rather than rubbing it ferociously, and put on a moisturizer right away.

One of the biggest problems people have with dry skin is caused by their soap. Soap can strip away your skin’s protective oils, and we tend to use soap way too much.

The average person who goes to school or work just doesn’t get very dirty during the day, But in the shower, many people scrub their skin like it’s the bottom of their shoes. Unless you’re a child or a ditch digger, the only parts of your body that need any soap or cleanser at all, are the face, hands, feet, groin and underarms.

The rest of the body can usually just be rinsed off with water.


Even though doctors and even some Moms may be preaching to wash our hands frequently, that can also lead to trouble.

Ironically, while trying to rid ourselves of germs, excessive hand washing can dry out the skin and cause it to crack and bleed. That makes infection much more likely.

Many people choose harsh soaps, like deodorant or antibacterial soaps, that generate lots of lather and leave us feeling clean.

Home remedies for dry skin may not be needed if a person just stops using harsh soaps.

The bubbling and lathering from soap removes the oils from the surface of the skin and dries it out.

Look for milder, “fragrance-free” soaps. Just because it says on the package “unscented,” it may still have perfumes. For many people with dry skin, the best choice is a mild skin cleanser rather than soap.

Don’t use any harsh implements to wash yourself. People use these abrasive sponges and brushes sometimes and that makes things worse. “Sanding your skin is not a good idea.” It can strip away the thin layer of natural oils that keeps our skin moist and healthy.

Don’t wear itchy clothing either. No matter how much you might love the look of a sweater, it’s not worth it, if it’s uncomfortable.

Make sure your clothing isn’t too tight either, since chafing can also cause and irritate dry skin. If your skin feels irritated, use detergents without perfumes or dyes.

A number of drugs have a side effect of drying out the skin.

High blood pressure drugs, (diuretics)
Retinoids like Retin-A (used for acne)

Dry skin often develops when people get older, especially in women. Changes in hormone levels can cause dry skin as we age.

Other minor and serious diseases, can also cause dry skin problems.

While dry skin can be a sign of these more serious health conditions, it’s usually nothing more than the typical dry skin, and home remedies for dry skin, can greatly improve your condition, regardless of how horrible it feels.

Try these great home remedies for dry skin:

Olive oil cleanser. Olive oil works as a natural cleanser and moisturizer. You just rub the oil into your skin and drape a warm, damp cloth over your face until it cools, then wipe away the excess oil.

Avocado mask. Simply puree half an avocado and mix it with a teaspoon of olive oil; you can also add a tablespoon of honey for very dry skin. Apply the mask to your face, leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, and wash it off. If you feel the need, you can finish with an application of your regular moisturizer.

Oatmeal soak. Adding a cup of oatmeal to a warm water bath can naturally rehydrate dry skin. It helps skin retain the moisture from the bath water.

Oatmeal honey mask. Mix 2 tablespoons of oats with a tablespoon of honey and a dash of water. Warm it up, then rub it into your skin. You can use it just to exfoliate, and wash it off right away, or leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes as a soothing, hydrating mask before rinsing.
